‘Ditchley’ is one of the most incredible historic properties in Gloucester County. Exceptional 1600+’ of blue waterfront on the North River with deep water depth at the new pier, private 37 acres with great privacy and farmland, restored 1890’s residence with wonderful features inside and out, two bedroom waterfront cottage and multiple dependencies, workshops, garages make this a fabulous residence.

History of the Property:
This property has many stories to tell.  The land was originally a 1,000 acre farm in 1649. In 1815 a small home was built on the cellar with 252 acres and was called ‘Bloomsburg.’  After the owner passed away, his wife sold the home in 1863 to Professor Edwin Taliaferro.  He restored and enlarged the home, renaming it ‘Miramer’ after a clear reflection made in the blue water.  Soon after completion the home burnt down.  In 1871, John Prosser Tabb bought the remains.  He currently was the owner of ‘Elimmington’ another historic home in Gloucester County.  It is believed that Mr. Tabb built the present Ditchley onto the cellar with original sections built with mortise and peg construction.

After passing through numerous hands from 1891 through 1899, Mr. William Ashby Jones bought the home with 60 acres as his summer residence.  Described by William Ashby Jones, Jr. in his own turn of the century summer journal, “The house was a cool, roomy and comfortable residence.  There was good fishing and in the fall good shooting and it was therefore the very place to suite us.”  His father remodeled, added onto and redid outhouses and added ‘acetylene gas plant’ for light.  It is also believed that he added the two ‘Queen Anne’ sleeping porches for the better breezes.

In 1978 and home passed through another few owners until the current owner bought the property in 1988.  The current owner went into a major restoration of the home, keeping the charming historic character with the modern conveniences of today.  Materials in the home such as antique heart pine and cypress wood from old barns, Spanish cedar (also known as fools Mahogany) that weathers well for exterior work while retaining its attractive grain, sanding all the wood work throughout to take back to the original-some with 10 coats of paint.  Non of the wood was store bought lumber and all the wood was prepared onsite.  The home had weathered well throughout the years and has been well-loved.
