GLOUCESTER

Gloucester is a diverse county, with lovely waterfront, rural farmlands, and all the conveniences you need along the Route 17 corridor. It covers 288 square miles, with 70 square miles of water. The current population is approximately 36,000. Located on the Chesapeake Bay, Gloucester has five rivers – the North, Ware, Severn, York, and Piankatank. These wonderful waterways offer terrific fishing, boating, kayaking, and are home to many vacation cottages as well as prestigious estates.

Founded in 1651 in the Virginia Colony, Gloucester was named for Henry Stuart, Duke of Gloucester. Its history can be traced to pre-Colonial times, when it was the home to many Native American tribes, including the Powhatans. Farming was essential to the Colonial economy, and many 17th and 18th century plantations have been lovingly preserved. Historic sites include Dr. Walter Reed’s birthplace, Ware and Abingdon Churches, and the Colonial Court Circle.

Known as the daffodil capital of the world, Gloucester farmers grow and ship massive numbers of the spring flower, with the Daffodil Festival being held at the height of daffodil season. Another local festival is the annual Guinea Jubilee held each September, which honors the county’s watermen and seafood industry.

Gloucester’s close proximity to the Hampton Roads area makes it a desirable community for those who commute to jobs in the city. The public school system includes five elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. Health care is readily available at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital, as well as many medical offices and urgent care locations.

There are great shopping opportunities in Gloucester, from well-known retail stores to one-of-a-kind antique and gift shops. Main Street is a treasure trove of unique shops, and restaurants offer everything from fine dining to ethnic specialties.
